As you know, Mike Huckabee has won Iowa and is in a great position to win many more early contests. I am a Christian. I am a Conservative. I am not a Mike Huckabee fan.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I think he is a decent person. Can some of you Christian conservatives out there tell me what the big deal is? I know he is anti-abortion. That can’t be all there is to it though is there? There are other anti-abortion candidates. After all, Right to Life didn’t endorse him….that went to Fred Thompson. Is it because he is a former Southern Baptist Minister and wears his piety on his sleeve, while castigating others who dont do the same? I certainly don’t mind a candidate speaking about his faith but he seems to be exploiting his faith. When George W. Bush evokes his faith it is genuine and heartfelt. When Reagan would lead this nation in prayer to the Almighty it was profound and resonated deeply. When Mike Huckabee speaks of his faith it seems to be in a political context constantly. His Christmas message, while right on target regarding the birth of Christ, felt as though he was saying “hey look at me, I believe in Jesus more than the others because they are being negative and I made this video”. I believe it is very easy to question his honesty now as well. Recently, Huckabee told a gathering of reporters that he was refusing to air one of his ads because it was too negative. He then proceeded to show it to the reporters. Of course it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the video would then be played all over the media and in Iowa. Do you Huckabee supporters really believe that wasn’t his intent? He was trying to say I am anti-negative ad, while at the same time running a negative ad. Sounds Clinton-esque to me. More to the point, his conservative credentials are just not there. Terrible on Illegal Immigration. Terrible on Taxes…please dont try and tell me that’s how it had to work in Arkansas. He was terrible when letting violent criminals go free.
My grandfather is a Baptist minister. Growing up, I saw first hand that not all people who call themselves Christians were very noble. My grandfather even used to call some of these greedy self-righteous (yes, I called them self -righteous) ministers and or missionaries “Southern Baptist shysters”. These people were more concerned about themselves and how much money they could make than they were the word of God. I believe this term fits Huckabee to a tee. He appeals to modern Christians who believe its better to have a cold church with 1,000 members than it is to have 100 members in a very warm church. He appeals to everything that is wrong with today’s churches. But while he appeals to them, he is doing the very opposite that they believe he is doing. He is engaging in the very dirty politics that he criticizes on a daily basis. Do you believe he didn’t know about the Push-polling?….. Or the negative ads being run by an “independent” group? while all the while claiming to despise dirty politics. These outside groups make it very easy for him to look squeaky clean. I don’t have any proof that he did these things on purpose but it sure looks bad after his whole negative ad fiasco with the media this past week. Oh, and his campaign manager seems to think its okay to punch the teeth out of another republican candidate. Shouldn’t a good Christian man remove this poison from his campaign or at least be a little more outspoken against this statement from his own people. I thought he was deeply against this kind of politics.
Just say no to the Southern Baptist Shyster.
